What is biotechnology?

Biotechnology, in one form or another, has flourished since prehistoric times. Centuries ago people discovered, quite by accident, how to make use of biological processes that naturally occur within living cells. While they might not have understood the processes, they did observed the results. They discovered, for example, that microorganisms like bacteria and moulds produced beer, wine and vinegar when grown in vats. Through trial and error, they learned to control these processes and produce useful materials.

In recent years our understanding of Biotechnology has accelerated and as a result, biotechnology has come to indicate the application of a much more sophisticated set of techniques and tools. These tools and techniques, taken from biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, cell biology and chemistry, are used to address a variety of problems.

The last four decades have seen lively developments in Biotechnology and we believe that the importance of Biotechnology is comparable to Microelectronics and Computer technology, and in the next century it will probably play a similar role to that of Chemistry in the industrial development of the 20th century.

Are biological fertilizers safe?

Biological fertilizers are not chemical based and are generally comprised of materials and extracts derived from natural sources. Generally they are broad spectrum and non-toxic to animals, plants and humans. For example, CB-FVR and CB-RSG contain beneficial microorganisms (BM), a mixed cultured solution with macro and micro nutrients, amino acids, enzymes, proteins, vitamins and minerals. The ingredients are materials and extracts derived from natural sedimentary deposits of organic origin. They are safe for the environment and are non-toxic to animals plants and humans.

What are liquid fertilizers?

Generally, liquid fertilizers are highly concentrated formulations that contain readily available nutrients that bolster soil microorganisms and improve the soil structure. Liquid fertilizers provide nutrients not generally available in N-P-K. Liquid fertilizers generally require more frequent applications than conventional fertilizers.

What form of fertilizer is best?

Fertilizers are manufactured in four basic forms granular, pellets, powder and liquid. All have advantages and disadvantages. Manure treated with CBPA is an excellent source of nutrients. For example, the nitrogen (N), phosphate (P2O5) and potassium (K 2O) content of feedlot manure, with bedding, is about 22, 18 and 25 lb/ac per ton respectively at a moisture content of around 50%. In addition, manure contains copper, iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, manganese and other nutrients which are essential to plant growth.
